【摘要】:Thetransitionfromletterpresstodigitalprintingprovidestheopportunityforamoreeffectivewaytocommunicateinformationonpostalitems.CurrentPostmarksincludeinformationsuchaspostagevalue,dateofpostingandequipmentidentification,butthisinformationisnotreadilymachinereadable.Theemergenceofdigitalprintingandimageprocessingtechnologiesofferstheopportunitytoencodecriticaldataintheformofdigitalpostagemarks(DPMs)whicharemoresuitableforcomputerdatacapture.However,theadoptionofthesetechnologiesrequirescarefulstudy,bothtomaximisethebenefitsfromtheirintroductionandbecausedigitalprintingtechnologymightbringwithittheneedfordifferentsecuritymeasuresthanthosecommonlyusedinassociationwithletterpressprinting.ThedocumentidentifiesavarietyoffactorswhichneedtobeconsideredintheDPMdesignprocess.Ithasthreemainpurposes.Itisintendedtoserveas:a)astandardprocess:forthedesignofapplicationsusingdigitalpostagemarks;b)aguide:tohelpinstructuringlocalstandardsfordigitalpostagemarks;c)acrossreference:topointtootherstandardsanddocumentsrelatedtoDPMapplications.Itisstressedthatthefactorsidentifiedareintendedtoberepresentativeanddonotconstituteanexhaustivelist.Similarly,thedocumentprovidesmanyexamplesofpossiblearchitecturesanddesignsolutionstotheissueswhichareraised.Thesearenon-normative.Theyaregivenforillustrativepurposesonlyandtherecertainlyexistsawiderangeofotherpossibilitieswhicharenotdescribed.Itisnotintendedtosuggestthatanyonearchitectureordesignortechnicalsolutiondescribedisinanywayrequiredorinanywaysuperiortoanyother,whetherdescribedhereinornot.
